네임 오디오가 외장 DAC에 대한 생각을 하기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸렸다 – 한동안 CD 플레이어에서 조차도 디지털 출력이 없었다.
지터를 제거하기 위한 솔루션인 ‘데이터 버퍼링과 리클럭킹’은 오리지널 Naim DAC에서부터 시작되어 데스크 오디오 시장을
타깃으로 디자인 된 이 최신형 DAC-V1에서도 적용되고 있다.
DAC-V1은 또한 24-bit/192kHz까지 소화하는 일렉트리컬 디지털 입력 3개와 옵티컬 입력 2개뿐만 아니라
24-bit/384kHz까지 소화하는 USB 단자를 포함하고 있는 디지털 프리앰프이기도 하다.
DAC-V1은 전기적 소음을 뿌리뽑는 일환으로 USB 연결에서 5V 전원을 사용하지 않는다. 네임 오디오는 최고의 사운드를 찾아서
심지어 볼륨 컨트롤까지도 어려운 길을 택하고 있다 – 디지털 방식으로 컨트롤 될지언정 이 볼륨컨트롤은 아날로그 식으로 조절된다.
물론, 네임은 여기에 최고급 헤드폰 앰프까지도 내장시켜 놓고 있다.
사운드
DAC-V1은 설정하기도, 사용하기도 무척 간단하며 (NAP 100 파워앰프와 매칭을 시킨다면 스피커만 얹으면 되는 초 간단
시스템을 구성할 수 있다), 솔직 담백하고, 극적이며, 탄탄함과 동시에 능수능란함을 보이는 구동력, 그리고 트랙 구조를 꿰뚫어보는
빼어난 사운드 컨트롤 성능과 같은 전형적인 네임 사운드를 전달한다.
복고풍 디스코 음악인 Daft Punk의 Get Lucky 24-bit/88.2kHz Flac 파일을 재생해 보면, DAC-V1은
단단한 저역대의 파워와 신나게 스탭을 밟을 정도로 생기 넘치는 사운드를 전달하며, 심지어 David Bowie의 The Next
Day 고해상도 버전과도 어깨를 나란히 할 정도로 사운드가 훌륭하다. 물론 CD급에서는 다소 사운드가 따분할 수도 있겠지만
DAC-V1을 통해 좀더 높은 해상도로 재생하면 탁 트인 개방감과 함께 역동적인 사운드를 맛볼 수 있다. DAC-V1은 고급
전자기기를 통한 고해상도 오디오의 진가를 톡톡히 보여준다.
여기에 이 네임 DAC는 락 음악 계통의 역동성만 전달하는 게 아니다: 이런 네임의 다이나믹스와 컨트롤 성능은 복잡하면서도 정교한
클래식 음악에도 통한다. 24-bit/192kHz의 바그너 음반을 재생하다보면 아주 섬세한 디테일 사운드가 진행되는 동안 강력한
사운드가 빠르게 밀려드는가 하면, 24-bit/352.8kHz의 실내악에서는 모든 미세한 뉘앙스와 악기 사운드 뿐만 아니라
녹음실의 실감나는 공간감과 공기의 흐름이 여실히 드러난다.
DAC-V1은 가격대비 제대로 건지는 물건 중의 물건으로 두 말할 나위 없이 네임 오디오 최고의 DAC이다...적어도 아직까지는.

Asynchronous USB Explained
Digital audio isn’t just about the data ? 0s and 1s ? and ensuring that
each sample value is accurately converted into a corresponding output
voltage. Also vital to achieving the highest fidelity is ensuring that
each successive sample is reproduced at a precise time interval from those
around it. If that time interval varies ? an effect known as jitter ?
then the output waveform will be distorted. To prevent this, the master
clock that controls the process should, ideally, be placed right next
to the digital to analogue converter circuitry, not remote from it. Asynchronous
mode USB provides for this because it allows data to be ‘pulled’ from
the source as required, whereas in other modes the data is ‘pushed’ down
the interface under control of the far inferior and distant clock in the
computer.
World class headphone amplifier
Naim has a long tradition of using discrete transistor, single ended
Class-A amplifiers for all its pre-amplifier stages. This has now been
extended to the headphone amplifier of the DAC-V1. The headphone amplifier
cleverly uses the pre-amp output amplifier for headphone drive. The moment
headphones are plugged in, the output current drive is automatically tu
ed
up five times to give dynamic drive for all headphone impedances. The
amplifier runs from a high voltage power supply so has the ability to
drive high impedance headphones with the voltage swing they require for
open and dynamic sound. The result is the audio stages are kept as simple
and pure as possible for both normal and headphone modes. Single ended
Class-A is long known for its natural sound quality and exhibits zero
crossover distortion. Its Achilles’ heel is that it is inefficient, for
headphone drive this is not important so all the benefits can be exploited.
Most headphone amplifiers are Class-AB, where the amplifiers output stage
is in two halves; one pushing and one pulling. Here the two halves meet
in the middle and can produce non-consonant distortion or distortions
that do not occur naturally in music.
NAP 100
사실, 네임 오디오의 NAP 100은 DAC-V1 DAC/프리앰프와 함께 매칭하여 여러 번 테스트해 봤지만 독자적인 리뷰를 할
정도는 아니었다.
하지만 본 리뷰를 통해서 우리의 이런 착오를 바로 잡을 수 있어서 다행이다 – 자사의 SuperUniti 올인원 시스템에서 파생된
고급 분리형 트랜지스터 앰프 디자인과 함께 구두 상자 만한 아담한 케이스에 담긴 듀얼 모노 방식을 채용하고 있는 NAP 100은
DAC-V1의 매칭 앰프를 넘어선 매력을 지니고 있다.
Naim NAP 100: 디자인
실제로 8옴에 채널당 50W를, 그리고 4옴에 채널당 75W의 강력한 출력을 전달하는 이 파워앰프는 다양한 스피커를 구동하고,
어느 공간이든 사운드로 가득 메우고, 그러면서도 렉의 공간을 최소한도로 차지하는 대담한 앰프를 원하는 사용자들에게 강한 호소력을
갖는다. 혹, 최소한도로 구성된 깔끔한 시스템을 원하는 사용자라면 이 앰프를 감쪽같이 숨겨 놓을 수도 있다.
NAP 100은 너비가 고작 21cm밖에 안 되고, 높이도 9cm정도이지만 안팎이 죄다 네임표이다. 이 파워 앰프는 네임 오디오의
솔즈베리 공장에서 회로 곳곳에 양극형 트랜지스터를 포함한 엄선된 컴포넌트를 적용하여 만들었으며, 대부분의 민감한 저항과 커패시터의
경우 메인 회로보드 표면 위로 일일이 손으로 납땜을 해주어 출력 장치에서 전달되는 노이즈를 방지하고 있다.
또한 선형 파워 서플라이는 각 채널 별로 감개를 포함하고 있으며, 대형 토로이들 트랜스포머를 적용하고 있다. 여기에 네임은 출력
장치를 위해 고정 토크(the torque of the fixings)를 정교하게 맞춰 놓고 있는데 네임 오디오 엔지니어 말에
따르면 이 부분이 사운드에 상당한 영향을 미친다고 한다.
Naim NAP 100 : 스팩
이
앰프는 네임오디오의 일반적인 비자성, 무공진 샷시와 슬리브, 그리고 블랙 파우더 코팅 처리를 적용하고 있으며, 연결 단자 역시 딱
파워앰프에 예상되는 정도로 단출하다. 그리고 역시나 네임답게 프리앰프 입력으로 RCA 포노나 DIN 단자를 선택하여 이용할 수
있게 해놓았고, 4mm의 스피커 출력 단자 4개를 마련해 놓고 있다. 또한 네임은 이들 스피커 단자를 위한 2핀 짜리 스피커
플러그를 제공한다 – 물론 일반 바나나 플러그도 사용할 수 있다.
사실, 이들 연결 단자들은 겉보기에는 간단해 보일지 몰라도 꼭 그렇지만은 않다. DIN 입력단자의 경우 프리앰프를 연결하는
케이블에서 메인 회로보드로 진동이 유입되지 않도록 플로팅 처리가 되는 반면 RCA 포노 입력단자는 메인보드에 연결되는 부분이
응력을 완화시키는 접합점으로 만들어져 있어 보드가 유연함과 동시에 잠재적인 간섭을 방지하도록 고정되어 있다. 심지어 스피커 출력
보드의 경우 메인 회로와 물리적으로 분리되어 있다.
그리고 전원 스위치는 후면부 왼쪽 편(후면부 기준)에 배치되어 있으며, 프런트 상에 있는 네임 로고는 불빛을 밝히면서 앰프가
정상적으로 구동되고 있음을 보여준다.
Naim NAP 100 : 사운드
네임 오디오의 ‘보편적인’ 엔트리급 파워 앰프인 NAP 155 XS와 비슷한 수준의 출력을 제공하는 NAP 100은 다양한 종류의
음악을 강력하지만 세련되게 전달하며, 스피커 가까이에서 듣는 근거리 청음을 위한 민감한 스피커와의 매칭 보다는 어떤 음악이든
당황하지 않고 당차게 소화할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 여기에 사운드의 유쾌함까지 전달하는 스피커와 외려 탁월한 매칭을 제공한다.
NAP 100은 수준 높은 음악적 몰입감을 전달하면서 우리의 예상을 뛰어넘는 DAC-V1과 함께 사용되든, 아니면 다른 대체
프리앰프와 매칭이 되든 간에 - 실제로 우리는 SuperNait의 프리아웃과 AV 리시버의 프런트 채널 프리아웃 등 몇몇
프리앰프부를 함께 테스트해 보았다 - 스피커를 구동하는데 있어서 부족함이 전혀 없었다.
NAP 100은 Daft Punk의 최신 앨범에서 복고 느낌이 물씬 풍기는 Memphis에서 녹음한 Dodge Brother의
The Sun Set에 이르기까지 모든 음악을 섭렵할 뿐만 아니라 복잡한 챔버 앙상블이나 재즈 음악을 재생할 때에도 발군의 실력을
발휘할 정도로 스피커의 보이스코일을 움켜쥐고 자신이 원하는대로 조종할 수 있는 완벽한 통제력을 가지고 있다.
물론, 파워앰프의 출력을 높이는 것이 당장에 사운드에 굵직한 효과를 가져다 주겠지만 베이스의 강력한 폭발성과 확장성을 타협없이
전달하는 동시에 유명한 맴피스(Memphis) 스튜디오의 잔향을 선명하게 전달하는 NAP 100은 사운드 컨트롤의 진수를
보여준다. 또한 NAP 100은 처음부터 끝까지 각각의 음역을 또렷하게 전달하는 동시에 온몸을 들썩이게 하는 리듬감, 시종일관
연주자 주변을 느끼게 하는 공간감, 그리고 음악을 만들어내는 절묘한 타이밍을 아낌없이 전달한다.
이와 비슷하게 이 네임 앰프는 경쾌한 느낌의 오프닝 곡인 She Makes me Happy를 비롯하여 요즘들어 살짝 두터운 음색을
보이는 그의 목소리, 그리고 타이틀 트랙에서 들리는 주변 목소리에 이르기까지 Rod Stewart의 새로운 솔로 앨범인 Time에
담긴 모든 감성과 순수 음악적 즐거움을 생생하게 전달한다.
또한 Friedmann Dressler의 바그너 '반지' 교향편곡을 Duisburg 필하모닉이 연주한 24-bit/192kHz
녹음 음반(Acousence Classics 발매)을 재생시켜 보면, NAP-100을 통해 시작부터 청음 공간을 꽉 채움과 동시에
여러분의 모든 감각을 사로잡는 웅장한 오케스트라 음악이 전달된다.
Naim NAP 100: 평가
이
컴팩트한 파워앰프는 여러모로 호소력을 갖는다. 다만 DAC-V1과 함께 발표되면서 DAC-V1의 그늘에 가려진게 안타까울 뿐이다.
어쩌면 당연한 일이겠지만.
청음 공간을 불사를 정도로 렉 공간을 가득 채우는 다소 거대한 장치에 대한 로망이 없는 여러분이라면, 네임 오디오의 NAP
100을 반드시 들어봐야 할 것이다. 물론 착한 가격은 덤이다.
장점 : 매우 합리적인 가격 대비 시원시워한 구동력과 깨끗한 사운드 전달, 다양한
스피커 구동, 단단한 만듦새
